Technical Designer: Become the Newest Member of the Vans Family

As an Apparel Technical Designer at Vans, you will be responsible for executing the technical design process from Development to Final Fit Approval to create the perfect fit for our consumers. This role holds a significant impact in maintaining the integrity of the Vans Brand while ensuring that products are developed in a manner consistent with established fits, quality standards, manufacturer capabilities and cost specifications for Vans Women’s. Your passion, experience, product knowledge and skills will support and leverage the company's continual quest to innovate and elevate.

How You Will Make a Difference:

  • You will own the fit process (both, on ‘live’ models and fit forms) to ensure successful sample execution in collaboration with Designers, Developers and VF Offices/Factories from 1st and 2nd Protos, Salesman Samples, and through Production.

  • You will partner with Design and Development, make appropriate recommendations and effectively communicate with VF Offices/Factories regarding fit, spec, shape, pattern and construction methods to improve fit and quality that best satisfies Vans Customers.

  • You will develop, review and approve garment technical specifications using existing blocks or market samples to complete Design Tech Packs that will be used to create top-line quality garments.

  • You will articulate Designer’s aesthetic fit to technical fit, and suggest corrections when necessary.

  • You will be the champion of fit consistency through the utilization of Fit Blocks and Fit Guide.

  • You will conduct bench-mark analysis and market R&D on existing and new silhouettes, when necessary.

  • You will adhere to Product Development Calendars and Vans/VF SOPs, to ensure timely completion of Fit Comments to VF Offices/Factories.

Skills for Success:

Years of Related Professional Experience: 8+ years

Educational/ Position Requirements:

  • College Degree in Fashion/Apparel Design (emphasis on pattern making and fit).

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in Technical Design working with various type of apparel categories (tops, bottoms, outwear, denim, knits and wovens etc.)

Additional Requirements:

  • A trained eye of good fitting garments (both, on ‘live’ model and Fit Forms) and thorough understanding of garment proportion, functionalities, fabric drapes; different body profiles and pattern shapes.

  • Hands-on experience in pattern development, flat and draping; garment sizing and pattern grading - patternmaking knowledge is a must.

  • Understanding of garment construction standards, manufacturing methods, materials (fabric and trims) and finishing techniques.

  • Working knowledge of apparel manufacturing, design, product development and merchandising processes from the inception of design through production.

  • Proactive, self-motivated, problem solving and results oriented with a sense of urgency, and the ability to adhere to product development process.

  • Working knowledge of apparel specification systems such as PLM, WebPDM, or, equivalent. Hands-on knowledge of Pattern Design System (PDS) such as: Gerber, Lectra, or Tukatech, is a plus.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Outlook/Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe (Illustrator and Photoshop).

  • Attention to detail, accurate and articulate. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both business and technical writing.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills while working in a fast-pace, diverse and multicultural environment.

Physical and/or Mental Requirements:

  • Willing and able to work additional hours when needed.

  • Stand and measure proto samples and fit models; bend, lift, open and move product and related office items (including, fit forms) varying in weight from 1 to 35 lbs.
