Job Description


The Assistant Buyer plays a key role within the buying function supporting the Retail Buyer in the daily operational needs, helping build balanced, commercial and innovative product ranges in-line with channel requirements. The AB assists the Buyer in the delivery of departmental strategies, identifying risks and opportunities to drive profitability and increase market share whilst supporting the needs of the consumer and meeting Brand objectives.


Market Knowledge:

  • Developing understanding of the Skate market, suppliers, brands and competitors

  • Tracking competitor activity in store and online documenting ranging, pricing, promotions etc

  • Understanding and interpret all market activity to drive Vans Retail ranges forward to remain the number one Skate Brand.

  • Maintaining strong understanding of the Vans DTC customers & markets through regular store visits


  • Assisting the Buyer with the delivery of analysis and preparation of future product strategies

  • Reviewing together with Buying and Planning the analysis of business by style, delivery and category to understand prior performance and develop future goals.

  • Participating in range plan development.

  • Collaborating with Planning reviewing inventory buy positions highlighting any issues to Buyer

  • Forward planning to ensure departmental critical path is followed; marketing/photoshoots, delivery flows, sign off & GTM meetings, sample management, buying system housekeeping, cross functional information sharing milestones.

  • Supporting the departmental promotional plan for the season

  • Understanding the store clustering model/method and its application


  • Supporting trading meetings as appropriate – samples, showcase new lines, Best & Worst sellers Collects info, data, prepares reports and presentations on consumer insights, market trends and competition, sales trends, KPI performances

  • Reporting on fast and slow sellers, informing the team to ensure timely in-season trading decisions

Administrative Support:

  • Supporting the Maintenance of the buy plans to ensure accurate and timely input

  • Responsible for seasonal order uploads, order maintenance, creates purchase orders, reports and provides feedback on the order revisions to B&P team

  • Ensuring that all product line lists and product sheets are correctly maintained in line with departmental critical path and deadlines.

  • Managing the co-ordination of seasonal samples and necessary information to enable seasonal meetings to run efficiently and make sure deadlines are met.

  • Ensuring sample availability for marketing, on-line, photography etc

  • Supporting the buyer in the preparation of seasonal product flows in line with departmental sign off

Cross Functional:

  • Working cross functionally with Stores, Web, Marketing, VM and Operations, to ensure they have the tools to understand and support the assortment strategy and presentation of product at Retail.

  • Adopting a collaborative approach

  • Supporting buyers / liaise with Product Merchandising and Planning teams as necessary.

  • Working with marketing on visual merchandising strategies and guidelines, store layouts, windows and promotional initiatives

  • Supporting on-line teams as necessary (branded assets, product data, copy)

  • Building strong working relationship with stores to Respond to requests and inquiries efficiently.

  • Coordinating and liaise with Allocators to respect the Buy delivery flow from First allocation to in season delivery in order to be aligned with the Seasonal Range and in store lay out and initiatives (monthly floor set and window)


  • Responsible for arranging and presenting to various audiences for key meetings as required

  • Collating data and images for the creation of aspirational monthly Vans magazines

  • Managing and develop the junior members of the team as appropriate

Internal: Buyers, Allocators, Retail Planners, Retail Visual Merchandising Team, Retail Property Team, District Managers, Store Managers, Planning Dept, Product Dept, Marketing Dept, IT, DC & Logistics Team

External: Suppliers where necessary


Education: Bachelor Degree, preferably fashion related

Experience: Minimum 1 years experience in retail buying or product management role.

Analytical Skills: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products, above all Excel. Strong business and financial analysis skills as well as retail math knowledge, including elements of mark up, margin, OTB, GMROI.

Language skills: English

Others: Willing to travel as and when deemed necessary

Interpersonal: Strong communication and negotiation skills. Ability to work within a team.

Personal: Ability to work in a fast paced environment and the ability to meet deadlines. Should be versatile, proactive, organised, motivated, able to multitask and good at planning.
